Frequently asked questions

I'm new to yoga, where should I begin?

The beginner class is Level 1 where the basics are taught.  No experience is necessary to begin this class.  New students may begin at anytime.

I'm a beginner. Is Level 1 the only class for me?

New beginners will also do well in the All levels classes.  Modifications can be made for unique skill levels and body issues.

I've practiced in the past, where should I begin?

It is not easy to tell a student of yoga at what level they should be taking classes until our qualified instructors are able to see you in your practice.  Starting in a Level 1 class would allow the instructor the opportunity to assess your urrent level.

How do I register for classes?

You can come about 15 minutes early to your first class and complete the registration form at the studio. The form needs to be completed prior to your first class.

Where are you located?

The studio is in Advance, NC.  Call or text for directions for your first visit.  336-414-3480.

Should I have had any prior yoga experience?

Not at all.  The Level 1 beginner class introduces the fundamental yoga postures, alignment principles, and breathing exercises that are easily learned by the most novice student

How long are the classes?

Depending on the class, class time will vary from 1 hour to 1 hour and 25 minutes.

What type of yoga do you teach?

We teach Hatha Yoga with attention to alignment.  Some people call this Alignment-Based Yoga.  Included in these classes along with the yoga poses are breath work, meditation, and relaxation.  We also offer Power Yoga and some other speciality classes.  Visit our Class Descriptions page to learn more.

What is alignment-based yoga?

When practicing the physical postures taught in yoga, called asanas, we ask that you pay close attention to how your body is aligned.  The instructor will guide your attention to your body and how to contract some muscle groups and relax others.  We also introduce the use of yoga props to help with the alignment of the body.  This way of practice helps us to maintain the integrity of the pose so that we create a healthier body, protect our joints, improve our posture, and release muscle tension.

Can I come and try a class?

Yes.  Our drop-iin fee is $15.00 to visit a regularly scheduled class. Class cards are available at discounted rates.  Check out policies here.

What do I wear?

Loose comfortable clothing that is easy to move in.

Do you have a changing room?

You are more than welcome to use our restrooms to change in.

What do I bring to class?

We provide all props.  If you have a yoga sticky mat, we suggest you bring your own, but we have plenty for everyone if you don't.

What should I do if I'm late for class?

Sometimes life gets in the way!  Of course we encourage you to arrive a few minutes early to class.  If you are late, make sure that the centering practice at the beginning of class is complete before entering the studio.  Also, be sure to unroll your mat quietly.

I haven't exercised in awhile, how will I do?

You will be fine.  Yoga is non-competitive and your instructor will help encourage you to work at a level that is comfortable for you.  You'll never be expected to do something that your body is not ready for.

Do you provide childcare?

No, space does not permit.  And, we feel that your time at the studio is more beneficial if you can come and leave your children with friends or family.  We want this experience to be completely yours.  If your children are on the location, you will not be able to completely detach from them.

What can practicing yoga do for me?

Yoga can help with losing weight, toning the body, relaxation, gaining strength, and increased flexibility.  However, what you can "do" for you can only be determined with a regular practice.  We encourage students to recognize their goals and keep them in mind throughout their practice, realizing that everyone is unique, and what happens for one person may be different from someone else.

I signed up for 12 classes, how often do I attend?

When you purchase a package of classes, you can use them as frequently as you like.  You can purchase a package of 12 classes and use them up in 4 weeks by coming to class 3 times a week or attend classes once a week for 12 weeks.  Our class packages have a 90 day expiration from first class used so make sure to use your classes within that 90 day period.

How many times a week should I attend class?

That will be up to you.  To experience the benefits of yoga, you will want to expand your practice from your weekly class to include a home practice.  If you are having difficulty developing a practice on your own, you may wish to consider taking classes 2 times per week.  It takes time to develop the motivation to practice at home, but if you stick with it, soon you will look forward to time on your mat!

Can I come and watch a class?

We don't encourage coming to watch classes out of respect for the students participating in the class.  Students become uncomfortable when they know they are being watched.  We want to provide a comfortable atmosphere for our students.

I'm very flexible, do I have to start at Level 1?

You are fortunate that you have flexibility, and that will definitely help you in the yoga poses.  However, since yoga is about more than flexibility, we feel that anyone new to the practice should start at the beginning.  We teach basic yoga postures and alignment principles in the beginner classes.  This is necessary to understand before going on to higher levels.  We all need to learn how to ground in the poses, find the correct form and the alignment, and understand how to breathe in the poses.
